The third leg of the nuclear triad are nuclear-powered missile submarines and their submarine-launched ballistic missiles, or SLBMs. These submarines are able to remain submerged for up to 2 months. This capability renders them essentially invulnerable to surprise attacks, and thus ideal to serve as a deterrent force. The submarine has continued to become faster and quieter since the first deployment of Polaris submarines in 1963.
